AN IDEA FROM ME
One thought I’ve often found myself having this year is how moments of adversity provide us the greatest insight into our own minds.
It was something my grandmother used to tell me often, but I never truly realised up until this year. Thanks to Covid and a few other personal troubles.
The challenges I ended up facing made me question my principles, my actions, my results and my thinking. In the physical sense of the world, it might seem like I haven’t made profound progress. But I know the mental journey traversed has been phenomenal.
I’ve realised that sometimes only adversities and hardships can truly test your ideals and ideas. In a way, hardships are a foolproof way of just getting rid of the bullshit. Because when you’re faced with difficult situations, it’s the unnecessary stuff that you flush out first.
In other words, adversity forces you to be an essentialist.
AN INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHT
However, that shouldn’t have to mean that we wait for adversity every time we want to make progress. In fact, unless you’re open to learning and change, you could end up spending your tough times lamenting and cribbing.
In the end, it is as much about perspective, as it is about the situation.
This reminds me of a beautiful quote I read sometime back:
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses.” ― Alphonse Karr, A Tour Round My Garden
A QUESTION FOR YOU
