Imagine,
You walk into a room.
A lobby. A Zoom call. A coffee shop. Even a DM's thread.
What do you think, people will notice first?
Your words?
Nope. Not yet.
They’re noticing your presence.
And whether you realize it or not,
You’ve already made a first impression before you even opened your mouth.
But what exactly counts as making your first impression?
Before we go to the dos, let’s highlight the don’ts first.
❌ It’s not about being loud.
❌ It’s not about being flawless.
❌ And it’s definitely not about being someone you’re not.
➡️ It’s about making people feel something they don’t forget about you.
But before you prepare an entire speech for them, there’s something you need to know.
People do not remember you for your speech or grammar.
They do it for how safe, curious, inspired, or important they felt in your presence.
That’s what counts.
But the question is, how do you make sure your first impression hits the bullseye?
For that, there is a solution.
But it’s not as easy as it sounds.
Because it’s the sum of small, invisible signals.
Signals that are all within your control.
Starting with,
➡️ Enter the space with calm energy
You don’t have to rush to prove yourself.
Just breathe before you speak. If people feel that you’re grounded, they will instantly start feeling safer around you.
➡️ Look people in the eye
Confidence doesn’t mean intensity. It means you’re present.
And for that, a gentle, steady gaze is enough. Not only is it powerful, but it also makes you unforgettable.
➡️ Speak like you’ve already earned respect
Don’t shrink your voice to be polite. You’re not a guest on your own stage.
Speak clearly, calmly, and with just enough conviction that makes people connect, not tune out.
➡️ Ask better questions than you give answers
The next time you are out somewhere, keep this rule of thumb handy: People always remember how curious you made them feel, and the best way to achieve that is through smart questions.
Thoughtful questions stay with people longer than smart replies. So, prepare a set of questions well in advance before you enter the event.
➡️ Mirror their emotional tone but don’t mimic them
If they’re soft, be gentle. If they’re sharp, be condensed.
But always stay you. That balance should never go away because that is exactly what makes people feel like they know you, even if they just met you.
Finally, a great first impression is never about perfection
It’s about alignment.
Your body language, your energy, and your words all telling the same story:
“I know who I am.
And I see who you are.”
That’s it. That’s the magic.
You don’t need to overperform.
You just need to be consistent with who you want to be remembered as.
Now, Comment below and tell me, what’s one habit you’re working on right now to become more unforgettable in first meetings?
