Are You Becoming Too Comfortable?

A few weeks ago, we talked about the hidden cost of playing it safe. Today, I want to continue that conversation and discuss another related topic: comfort zone.

 

But first,

 

What is a comfort zone?


If I have to define comfort zone in the easiest possible way, then it is a place where you feel extremely safe, familiar, and comfortable, where you don't have to worry about making mistakes or failing.

 

Sounds like heaven. Isn’t it?

 

While feeling comfortable might sound nice, staying in your comfort zone can be harmful in the long run.

 

Because staying in your comfort zone can lead to a syndrome called "comfort zone syndrome." And this syndrome can slowly damage you in many ways, including:

 

 

Reduced self-esteem: Staying in your comfort zone can make you feel like you're not capable of achieving anything great.

Increased stress: Feeling stuck in your comfort zone can turn out to be quite stressful.

Decreased resilience: If you're not used to facing challenges, you might have a hard time dealing with setbacks.

Missed connections: Staying in your comfort zone can make it harder to meet new people and make connections.

Regret: Later in life, you might regret not taking more risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone.

 

Apart from these, the thing that will take the biggest blow in your life is your growth scale. 📈

 

With so many issues now known to you, you might be thinking, "What do I do about it Adete? How do I break out of my comfort zone?"

 

That's why, here are 5 things that you can implement to break off from these mental ruts:

 

➡️ Start small: Every major decision starts with the first step, but I also know how overwhelming taking that first step for someone. That's why begin by taking the smallest step outside of your comfort zone.

Ask yourself, “What's your goal, and what's the smallest action you can take to move towards that goal?”

 

This will help you to build your confidence.

 

➡️ Challenge yourself: Now that you know your goal, it's time to challenge yourself to achieve it. However, do not directly try to set goals that are easy to achieve. Set goals based on the areas of life, you feel left behind.

➡️ Don't be afraid to fail: We as humans are bound to make mistakes and even fail at times. I mean look everywhere around you, have you ever seen any successful person who hasn't faced any form of setbacks in their life?

 

There is even a saying that you cannot be successful if you haven't seen failure, so don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Because, when you make mistakes, learn from them, and correct them the next time you try, only then you, my friend, is on the right track.

 

➡️ Seek support: Stepping out of your comfort zone is already difficult and on top of that, if you try to do it all alone, things can get really messy at any time.

 

Therefore the best way to deal with this situation is to seek support.

Talk to friends, family, or mentors about your fears and insecurities. You can also discuss your next step to achieve your goals. This way, they can offer the support and encouragement you might need.

 

➡️ Reward yourself for stepping outside of your comfort zone: Now that you are making steps towards your goal and out of your comfort zone, don't forget to reward yourself for your bravery and any achievements you make.

This will help you associate stepping outside of your comfort zone with positive feelings and further motivate you to move ahead in life.

 

 

Staying in your comfort zone can be super comfortable, but it can also limit your potential.

When you constantly push yourself out of your comfort zone, only then can you open up a world of possibilities for yourself and achieve your dreams.

 

So, don't hesitate and get up from your couch to conquer your dream.
